Both the Hillsboro boys and girls teams fall just short in state quarterfinal defeats to league foes Wilsonville and La Salle

HILLSBORO TRIBUNE PHOTO: WADE EVANSON - Hilhi's Bryan Tapia Silva chases a ball during the Spartans 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Wilsonville last season.Good seasons ended in less-than-positive ways for both the Hillsboro boys and girls soccer teams, with both teams losing heartbreakers in the quarterfinals of the OSAA 5A state soccer championships.

The boys, led by first team all-state honoree Bryan Tapia Silva, lost a 1-0 match to Wilsonville on a wet and rainy day at Hilhi's Tiffeny Milbrett Field. It was an especially bitter end to an otherwise exceptional season that included a Northwest Oregon Conference championship and a 6-0 defeat of the same Wilsonville team, on the same Tiffeny Milbrett Field almost exactly a month prior.

The girls, who finished third in the NWOC with a league record of 4-2-1, lost in even more heartbreaking fashion, dropping a 2-1 decision to eventual state champ La Salle on penalty kicks.

The Spartan boys and girls combined to put 17 players on the NWOC all-league team, including six first-teamers, five second-teamers and six honorable mention selections. In addition to the all-league honorees, the Spartans' junior Tapia Silva was voted first team all-state, while fellow juniors Edwin Rivas and Madison Ellsworth, along with senior Icela Garcia were selected to the all-state second teams.
