Preserving memories, updating design

Designer-builder pair complete interior remodel of riverfront home

When the clients of builder and remodeler Larry Todd of The Maywood Company and designer Linda Luberto of Linda Luberto and Associates, LLC, built their custom home more than 20 years ago, they knew they had a rare gem in its waterfront location, affording stunning views of the Willamette River on a one-plus acre site. They raised their family in this home and now hope to share the spectacular location with the next generation.

But, in the 20-plus years since they first built the home, it had become dated. Moving was not an option, as they wanted to keep the tranquility and the memories the house had given them. So, they decided to plan out a complete remodel to update and refresh the entire space.

Recently completed, the transformation is a remarkable one

“There are only a finite number of lots with waterfront and other amenities in Lake Oswego and West Linn, or the Portland-metro area for that matter, that are just irreplaceable. This is one of those properties. It is a stunning location,” said Todd of the property.

Along the way, Todd and Luberto, who both live and work in Lake Oswego, were able to fulfill some of unique requests for their clients — including the installation of heating beneath shower tiles, the fabrication of wrought-iron railing and the installation of a 2,000-plus pound bathtub of solid stone.

For riverfront remodel, one of the first items on the agenda was removing a wall and a two-sided fireplace that separated the home’s formal living and family rooms.

“They now have a wonderful open area to accommodate their family and friends and a fantastic floor-to-ceiling fireplace, which anchors the room,” Luberto said.

The home’s new kitchen features a glass island bar made of custom hand-cast glass. It sits atop a mirror to reflect floating specks of gold and silver. The kitchen also includes an Evo grill, a coffee bar, wine storage and a refrigerated drawer for beverages. An atrium window was removed and large windows were added to further open up the home to the outside and the swimming pool.

Before the remodel, the master bath had an outdated ’80s-style glass block divider that separated it from the master bedroom. To update the space, Todd installed a new wall and double doors to separate the two areas. Along with Luberto’s design ideas, the result is now contemporary chic.

The new bathtub alone, Luberto said, is a “show stopper,” created from a solid piece of 2,000-plus pound limestone. The limestone flooring is heated throughout — even in the new shower, which features floor-to-ceiling pieces of solid slab granite.

In the master bedroom, Luberto created a custom-made eight-foot-high headboard with customized fabric panels surrounded by rich walnut. It also features a light bridge, suspended nightstands, a platform bed and a custom-made silk quilt. She embellished the new master fireplace surround with glass tiles that add sparkle to the room, and play off the warm woods and textured fabrics.

The client tracked down a one-of-a-kind solid quartz pedestal sink for the remodeled powder bath, which is backlit to enhance the veining and colors of the stone. Sipili wood lines the lower walls of this bathroom.

Todd built two additional baths for the remodel, one of which includes a custom steam/shower and curved tile bench to relax and enjoy an in-home spa experience. He also added a media room, a wine room and a train room for the client’s train set.

New interior doors and new carpeting were installed throughout.

Luberto selected premium woods for the remodel, relying on local vendors whenever possible; all hardwood floors are teak and select walnut and sepili woods with birdseye maple were used for the fireplace and bath cabinetry. She also custom-designed all the furnishings for the new space.

The result, she said, is an atmosphere that is warm, contemporary, family friendly and inviting; the homeowners agree.

“The best testament is ‘Would you use Larry and Linda on another project?’” one of the clients said. “The answer is that we already are using their services to assist in the design and construction of a home for our daughter in Lake Oswego’s First Addition.”
