The Arbor Day Foundation will brighten up your fall by offering five free crapemyrtle trees when you join the Foundation in October. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation’s Trees for America campaign — a program dedicated to environmental stewardship through tree planting. The trees will be shipped postpaid between Nov. 1 and Dec. 10 at the right time for planting. The 6-to-12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Planting instructions are enclosed with each shipment of trees. New members of the Arbor Day Foundation also receive "The Tree Book," which includes information about tree planting and care. Apply for memberhip before Oct. 31 to receive the trees. Landscape artist to present lecture and workshop

Award-winning landscape designer and author Julie Moir Messervy will present a landscape design and workshop on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The Oregon Chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers hosts the event. Cost is $30.

Messervy will illustrate her points with her studio’s wide-ranging residential and institutional projects and explain the five paths she’s taken to help people create and enjoy their outdoor surroundings. Messervy will follow the lecture with a workshop entitled “Creating Home Outside” for landscape design professionals on Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $275. Participants will be introduced to Messervy’s design process presented in her award-winning book, "Home Outside.”

Halmy joins Windermere leadership team

Oregon Realtors raise money for affordable housing

Members of the Oregon Association of Realtors (OAR) and other industry attendees raised $40,000 at the fifth annual “Taste of Portland” in West Linn on Sept. 13 for the charitable HOME Foundation. The Vegas-themed event was held at the Oregon Golf Club and featured food sampling, a silent auction and an oral auction.

The HOME Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that provides financial resources to create, expand and encourage home ownership opportunities for Oregonians at or below local median income. The foundation was created in 2004 by a group of Realtors.

Since its inception, the foundation has given nearly $430,000 in grants. Past grant recipients include local chapters of Habitat for Humanity, Clackamas Community Land Trust, African American Alliance for Home Ownership, Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives Inc., Umpqua Coastal Housing Center, Corvallis Neighborhood Housing Services and Homes for Our Troops.
