Mother-daughter duo embrace French, shabby chic

Thanks to their impeccably chic taste and natural eye for design, the team of interior designers has opened their own home décor boutique, Celery Rose, in Lake Oswego.

Williams studied interior design at the Art Institute of Portland. She opened the petite 600-square-foot boutique with her mother in June. The French country-inspired, shabby chic space offers pillows framed in ruffles, silk pink robes, handmade linens, candles, jewelry, dishes, gifts and furniture. Custom furniture, crib linens and full bedding sets can also be ordered. Body products are provided by the likes of The Good Home Co. and Barr Co.

“We sort of had this vision a few years ago,” Williams said. “This was always our taste and what we wanted to do. Now if you look at Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn, you see similar design items.”

Williams said design goes in waves. About three years ago she noticed the European, antique and distressed look become more mainstream. She said these design aesthetics are becoming more popular.

The feminine details speak to a niche clientele, but Williams said the aesthetic could be tailored to the rugged masculine style of the Northwest and even modern tastes. Williams advises to mix heavy pieces of furniture with lighter pieces to keep a masculine balance in a room. Comfortable usable fabrics and slipcovers also create a homey environment.

“Say you have a white slipcover couch, pair it with a distressed leather ottoman and masculine vibe pillows,” Williams said. “Use mirrors and heavier pieces with the feminine furniture.”

Williams works with shabby chic vendors — whose merchandise is rarely found on showroom floors — for both Celery Rose and her design clients. Home décor from can be ordered from Aidan Gray, Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic, Vagabond Vintage, Bella Notte Linens, Peacock Park Design and more.

“I don't know that any other stores look quite like mine,” Williams said.

As a designer, Williams stages homes, designs remodels and new construction, and offers tasks as small as rearranging furniture or offering color consultations.

She hopes Celery Rose will provide a relaxing getaway for clients and window shoppers alike.

“People should feel inspired," she said. "The whole thing about the boutique and design is that you want people to come in and stay and curl up on the couch with a bunch of pillows and a soft velvet blanket.”

Celery Rose is located at 520 Second St. in Lake Oswego. For more information, including updates about a grand opening party, call 503-310-7222, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or visit celeryrose.com.
