Get free dogwood trees by joining Arbor Day Foundation

Everyone who joins the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation with a $10 donation will receive 10 free white-flowering dogwood trees through the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

The trees will be shipped between Oct. 15 and Dec. 10. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Planting instructions are enclosed with each shipment of trees.

Soil workshops offered for small vegetables farms

Oregon State Extension is offering a two-day, hands-on workshop for small-scale vegetable farmers at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center, 15210 NE Miley Road in Aurora, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 13 and 14. Registration fee is $50 per day or $90 for both days. Registration can be completed online at

The workshops are intended for new and experienced vegetable farmers hoping to learn more about soil management. The first-day presentation, Soil Types and Soil Structure, will cover soil types, texture, structure and organic matter. Participants will have a chance to view soil horizons in the deep soil pit and observe a tillage demonstration. The presentation on the second day, Nutrient and Water Management, will cover soil testing, soil moisture concepts, nitrogen management and identifying nutrient deficiency symptoms. Participants will also learn how to use the OSU Organic Fertilizer and Cover Crop Calculator.

See ‘brains and bones’ of ICF house under construction

Winsome Construction invites the public to “come see the brains and bones of a high-performance Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) home under construction from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1870 Pattulo Way in West Linn. Attendees will learn what’s inside the walls of an ICF home that makes it cozier, safer, healthier and more efficient while touring the home with the builder; appetizers and winewill be provided.
