Anne Nicoud believes once you’ve seen Phantom Screens you won’t be satisfied with anything else. She believes homeowners are going to wonder how they ever got along without them on their windows and doors.

Phantom Screens are not new — they’ve been manufactured in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada since 1992. The retractable screens are made for windows, doors and large openings, such as patios, balconies and pools. They hide simply, open smoothly and close securely.

Nicoud, owner of Oregon Retractable Screening, is the authorized distributor for Phantom Screens for Oregon and southwest Washington. She explained the many benefits of retractable screening, including how they allow for full ventilation, maintain décor and view, expand your living space and protect against UV rays and insects. Screening allows indoor and outdoor living spaces to integrate seamlessly.

“We really only need screens from March through October,” Nicoud said. “And then let’s get them out of the way, so we have unobstructed views and more light.”

The screens are custom made and can be fit with latch or release handles or magnetic latches and in-jamb or surface mounts. They can be used on single swing-in or swing-out doors, on double French doors, sliding patio doors and oversized doors and all window types.

Customers Jim and Terri McCaffrey had Phantom Screens installed in their 1957 mid-century modern home in Lake Oswego.

“The unique style of the windows required us to have these special designed screen systems,” Jim McCaffrey said. The McCaffreys recently remodeled 70 percent of their house. “The old needed to be replaced with newer and more attractive screens. They do work smoothly and look terrific.

“Anne and her employees have been terrific; very flexible with installation schedules ... Anne especially has been very sensitive to our schedule and has stayed in constant contact with us regarding the production of and delivery of our screen system. I teach business and what she has exhibited in terms of customer service, pricing strategies and quality operations is exactly what I hold up for my students as exemplary entrepreneurship.”

Screens can be operated manually or motorized and activated with a remote control.

“You can program them with your iPhone,” Nicoud said. She also said many people like to tie them into the garage door system, affording them a screened garage, free from insects and with fresh air ventilation.

The screens come in nine designer colors and through Phantom’s custom coating program, virtually any color can be matched. A variety of Decoral wood grain finishes are also available for those with custom wood windows and doors.

Mesh options range from standard, which reduces up to 55 percent of UV rays; solar, which blocks 75 percent of UV rays; premium solar, which blocks up to 80 percent of UV rays and provides significant shade and privacy, which blocks up to 100 percent of UV rays. All the mesh types seal out insects, reduce heat and glare and help prevent fading of furnishings.

“The options of colors, sizes and mesh type make matching your décor simple,” Nicoud said. “You can really save on your air conditioning costs, too.”

With professional installation and a limited lifetime warranty to protect your investment, Phantom Screens can last a lifetime. Maintenance is minimal; the mesh fabric, housing, tracks and slidebar can be washed with water, mild detergent and a soft brush.
