The art of making things beautiful

Wishing Well Floral designs arrangements for all of lifes special occasions

by: VERN UYETAKE - Wishing Well owner Janine Voll says that because of their special local ties, they have developed a strong local following where customers count on her for all their important floral needs.“I've always kind of been a creative independent type of person,” said Janine Voll, behind the backdrop of an ornate gazebo wrapped in vines and ferns. “I guess I fall into the true entrepreneur category. I think it’s just kind of in my blood.”

Voll describes herself as the perpetual artist – a painter, a drawer and a sculptor — but her real love is plants and flowers. So her entrepreneurial spirit pushed her to the floral industry. Today she is the owner of Wishing Well Floral in West Linn.

Voll has owned the business for 17 years. She purchased it from the Ethington family who owned the business for almost 50 years. Her job, in its simplest form, is to make everything beautiful.

“In the floral business, I’ve found a way to combine horticulture with art,” she said. “It’s an art form, it’s very creative and everything that we do here is one of a kind.”

Wishing Well Floral has been in its current location — across the street from the West Linn Post Office — for six years. It was formerly in the Bolton Plaza. Sage-colored paint coats the 1,000 square feet inside the floral shop.

Scattered across the floor are shabby chic white wicker plant holders, mosaic stepping-stones and a decorative metal tricycle that holds two plants. The shelves are lined with cherub and gargoyle stone statues, orchids, climbing plants and red and white teddy bears holding hearts that read “I love you.”

Voll describes the floral shop as a small, hands-on business. Two people, including Voll, make the arrangements and deliver the flowers. Voll said she takes pride in her intimate approach to business. Although the floral industry has changed with the emergence of the Internet — some for better, some for worse — Voll takes pride in being a small local business.

“Little businesses really make the whole fabric of a town have more character,” Voll said. “And we take good care of our people because we are part of the community too. We are part of what’s happening around here. We contribute. You give you get, it's sort of the rhythm of being part of a community.”

Voll said this commitment extends past the community — and into beautiful, fresh flowers. Wishing Well Floral is a full-service floral shop that also sells indoor plants. They create arrangements in all styles, everything from high fashion, Asian-inspired designs, country chic and European garden. The business always has a variety of ribbons, pots, greeting cards and flowers in stock, but if you want it Voll can order it within one week’s notice.

The business receives flowers locally and from all over the world. They can also ship arrangements across the globe to places as far as Italy, Japan and Australia. “If you can think of it, we’ve done it,” said Voll, putting her hands to her face and laughing. “We do our best to say, 'yes.'”

This desire to say "yes” and strong community ties has helped Wishing Well Floral establish a devoted customer base and convergent new patrons.

“We've got loyal locals,” Voll said. “They trust us with birthdays, new births, weddings, anniversaries and funerals — they trust us with their whole lives because they know we’ll take good care of them.”
