For The Review, Tidings

Applebee’s Restaurant on Meadows Road now has a real Lake Oswego feel to it.

In its recent renovation, the restaurant added murals and photographs of the surrounding area, and a big part of it shows Lake Oswego. The feeling the restaurant emanates is now “There’s no place like home.” Even when you eat out.

The change came about when the Applebee’s Group, the largest franchiser for Applebee’s, recently purchased 100 Applebee’s Restaurants.

“Their goal was to remake the majority of those restaurants in the first year,” said Darryn Athis, Applebee’s general manager. “I filled out a questionnaire with the themes I wanted. The company acquired the photos and the design team incorporated them into the murals.”

The company did not waste any time. Eighty-nine of the restaurants were renovated, and now the Meadows Road restaurant features an attractive Lake Oswego mural in a corner. It features a photo of the first fire bell, a giant blowup of a postcard advertising Lake Oswego, a map, a photo of the downtown clock, a welcome to Lake Oswego sign and more. With a little wandering, one can find other LO-related murals and photos, including a wall of Lake Oswego (including Lakeridge) sports.

There even is a photo of Kevin Love in his Laker days, seemingly coming out of the sky to smash an opponent’s shot into oblivion.

For those seeking something a little less exciting there is a beautiful photo of Lake Oswego’s favorite bears — the three brass bears in front of the Lake Oswego Public Library.
