Restaurant opening satisfies lifelong dream

With the opening of Baird’s on B Bar and Grill, dining options in Lake Oswego increased and the owners hope you will regard the new restaurant as the neighborhood place to be, regardless of where you live.

The restaurant is owned by Lake Oswego residents Cindy Oyama and Baird Bulmore. With more than 30 years experience in restaurant management, it has been Bulmore’s dream to open his own restaurant.

“I’ve been looking for five years for the perfect location,” he said. “I love this location. It is so lucky it happens to be in our hometown.”

Baird’s on B is located in the space formerly held by Terrace Kitchen, above Chuck’s Coffee at the corner of Second Street and B Avenue. Bulmore said the space has been used as a restaurant for the past 30 years, but much renovation was required before he could open. The space has been totally remodeled — the kitchen was moved to provide more efficient flow, and all doors, floors and windows were replaced.

“The only things that were left untouched were a wine rack and the chairs,” Bulmore said.

Oyama brought the space to life with brightly colored décor, including banquette seating. A special feature of the remodel is the bar top, made of a reclaimed Douglas fir plank. Reclaimed wood was also used to make the bar tables, the hostess stand and the outdoor signs. It all comes together to create a space that is warm and welcoming and makes guests want to linger a little longer to soak up the atmosphere.

Seating is arranged in three environments.

“If you want to watch TV and be part of the gang, you can sit in the bar area,” Bulmore said. “We have the long communal table and the tables with the window view and then if you want a more private, romantic dinner, we can seat you in a quieter area.”

There is also a banquet room, and the patio along the B Avenue side of the building, which will open when the weather warms.

Prior to opening Baird’s on B, Bulmore was the manager at Sal’s Italian Kitchen on Northwest 23rd in Portland. From Sal’s he brought along the executive chef Salvatore Campagna. (He was not the restaurant’s namesake.) Campagna’s resume includes executive positions at El Gaucho in Portland and Hall Street Bar and Grill in Beaverton.

The menu Bulmore and Campagna have created features a wide variety of dishes at moderate prices. Guests may select from several salads, including a warm spinach salad with grilled sweet onions, roasted wild mushrooms, toasted hazelnuts and bacon vinaigrette; small plates such as cioppino made of clams and mussels, Dungeness crab, prawns, white wine tomato broth; and mac and cheese made with roasted garlic, caramelized onions and aged white cheddar. Sandwiches include a steak sandwich, burgers, Portobello mushroom with white cheddar and tomato and more. Entrees range in price from $11.50 to $20 for the top sirloin steak with black truffle potato gratin and grilled broccolini served with a rich mushroom demi-glace.

The wine list represents wineries from Oregon, California and Washington. Beer and a full bar are also available.

“We want Baird’s to be your family, neighborhood place,” Bulmore said. “Don’t feel like you have to dress up to come here. Just come and enjoy.”

Baird’s on B is located at 485 Second St. in Lake Oswego. It is open for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and for dinner 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 4:30 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Join them for happy hour from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reservations are not necessary but can be made by calling 503-303-4771.
