Independent Actuaries gets bigger by going small

Pension consulting firm makes happy transition to Lake Oswego

by: REVIEW, TIDINGS PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - Independent Actuaries owners Karen Dunn, Steve Diess and Libby Moore say that in Lake Oswego they are surrounded by potential customers â€' small businesses looking for the right pension strategy.

Independent Actuaries has found home sweet home in Lake Oswego after moving from Beaverton.

Company owners Libby Moore, Karen Dunn and Steve Diess have only good things to say about their new location on Kruse Way. Coming to LO has been a great way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their firm.

“When we had the opportunity to move we, asked ourselves, ‘Where do we want to be?’” Moore said. “We were really interested. I think we found the perfect spot.”

The new office is much roomier, more beautiful and has a great view of Lake Oswego’s rolling greenery.

“A lot of people are just dropping by now,” Diess said. “That never happened in Beaverton.”

“It’s nicer to have personal interaction,” Dunn said. “That’s a really big benefit.”

And there’s more.

“Also, I live up the street,” Dunn added.

Of course, business is their No. 1 objective, and the three owners believe Lake Oswego is just the place to do what they do best: designing the right pension programs for small businesses. Many actuaries only think big, but Independent Actuaries has found a profitable niche serving small businesses.

“We’re the largest independently owned company of our kind,” Dunn said.

When it comes to small, that means just about everything: attorneys, doctors, dentists, developers, authors, publishing companies.

“Success has arrived later for them,” Moore said. “So they need to save a lot of money for retirement in a short time. We’ve got to look someone in the eye and say, ‘You can save $200,000 now.’”

“The traditional 401(k) can’t do that,” Dunn said.

“Most accountants place value on what is happening in a company today,” Diess said. “We are an actuary that looks at what could happen in the future.”

As for big versus small, Independent Actuaries has a strong argument in its favor.

“A lot of consultants don’t like small businesses,” Dunn said. “We do like them. Small businesses even have a hard time of finding a company that will consider them. We are actually good at small plan work.”

The community can find out more about Independent Actuaries at its open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 24. Besides food, drink and information, Moore said, “There will be some very pleasant actuaries they can get to know.”

Independent Actuaries is located 4500 Kruse Way, Suite 200.
