Crave Bake Shop could take the cake
Local baker's sweet success goes on Food Network for third time
Kyra Bussanich, owner of Crave Bake Shop in Lake Oswego, will appear in "Cupcake Champions," a special series on the Food Network that premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday. Bussanich appears in the second episode, which will begin airing May 20.
Bussanich has appeared twice on the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars," winning the baking battle last December.
Though the new show marks her third time to appear on the national network, Bussanich said she still feels pressure during the competition.
'The pressure is definitely on,' she said.
Specializing in creating gluten-free cupcakes, Bussanich strives for her cakes to beat the competition in all aspects: taste, texture, originality and appearance.
In each episode of the special series, four former cupcake champions are vying for the chance to have their cupcakes featured at a Hollywood VIP release party for the animated movie 'Madagascar 3.' The tension will mount as viewers learn which team added enough movie magic to its display to make it to the grand finale.
The winner of the grand finale will take home $50,000 and land another cake catering gig.
'Now that we've been through a few competitions, I know what the judges like," Bussanich said. "All of the contestants will have won at least two times. It's fun not knowing who they selected. It was interesting to see how the other competitors do.'
Assisting Bussanich during the challenges is her friend and fellow pastry schoolmate, Jackie Eizik.
Though Bussanich doesn't appear until the second episode, she said she hopes viewers will tune in for the full series starting Sunday.
'Tune in and cheer on the hometown girl!'
