Project hits the nail on the head
Lake Grove Elementary School's gymnasium was turned into a workshop briefly when kindergarten students invited their dads to bring in their hammers and help them build birdhouses.
'This is the third year doing this event,' kindergarten teacher Jen Hunt said. 'Dads are invited to bring a hammer and come build a birdhouse with their child. Afterward their picture is taken and that picture gets framed in a foam toolbox-shaped frame as a gift for Father's Day.'
Students and dads snacked on doughnut holes, grapes and strawberries during the event. As the finale, students sang 'Go My Son.'
'It's a Native American song that talks about children going forth and learning so they can bring their knowledge back to the tribe and lift up the native people,' Hunt said. 'It has motions and a lovely key change where their voices swell, so predictably, dads cry. It's great."
When the event was over, the dads took their hammers and birdhouses home.
