West Linn author and illustrator to hold June 30 book signing

Eight-year-old Bud Chen-

owith has just moved from Chicago to New Mexico and tomorrow will be his first day in a new school. When he nervously jumps on the school bus, he has no idea that his new school won't even be in this solar system!

'I was usually a nervous wreck when the first day of school approached,' West Linn author and illustrator Mark Fearing said. 'And growing up in rural Minnesota, I spent many nights looking into the sky imaging all kinds of outer space adventures.'

Fearing's graphic novel, 'Earthling!' is a perfect mix of first-day-of-school fears and imagination run wild. This story for young readers started as an idea for an animated short film when Fearing was studying for his master of fine arts at the UCLA Animation Workshop.

'My friend, Tim Rummel, was going to help me produce the animated short, but he kept asking me to expand the story. To see what more I could make of it.'

Before long it was a story so big only a graphic novel could contain it.

Fearing left graduate school to work at Walt Disney Television Animation but kept hammering away at what would become the 250-page adventure story. Since 2005, Fearing has lived in West Linn with his family and 'Earthling!' has been a big part of his life.

During that time he has also illustrated several award-winning picture books, including 'The Book That Eats People,' 'The Three Little Aliens,' 'Big Bad Robot' and 'So You Want to Catch Bigfoot.' But at 250 pages, 'Earthling!' took more than three years to write, edit and SUBMITTED - Mark Fearing will hold a book signing for 'Earthling!' June 30 at Green Bean Books in Portland. 'It's a story about a kid who discovers he can overcome events he couldn't even imagine before they happened to him,' Fearing said. It's crafted to be easy to read and along the way introduce readers to some of the fantastical elements of space science.

'‘Earthling!' is funny, thrilling, wildly imaginative and utterly engrossing,' said Win Wiacek, chairman of the Comics Creators Guild.

'Earthling!' will be landing in bookstores around the country in July from Chronicle Books. Fearing will be signing books June 30 at 2 p.m. at Green Bean Books, located at 1600 N.E. Alberta St. in Portland.
