Tickets are still available to the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.Come one, come all to the fourth annual Rumble on the River, regarded by many as the most anticipated fundraising event in the Portland metropolitan area for the American Cancer Society. The event is the brainchild of husband and wife team Doug Fish and Michelle DeCourcy and is held at their Willamette riverfront home.

The idea for the Rumble came to DeCourcy when she was brainstorming fundraising ideas for her first Lake Oswego Relay for Life team.

“We wanted something fun and unique. I had a couple of friends in bands and thought of throwing a total garage band party. We had kegs from Deschutes Brewery and pizza from Pizza Schmizza,” DeCourcy said.

DeCourcy said the original event was very basic and much smaller in scope that subsequent Rumbles. The event has blossomed into a much more sophisticated event, although always with outstanding musical guests for entertainment.

“It’s an exciting event that both my husband and I enjoy hosting,” DeCourcy said. “We’re both passionate about music. This event is so personal for us on so many levels ... our ties to cancer and to this event, we’ve put our personal breath into it. We both realize that you truly can make a difference. So we have some fun and raise some dollars.”

Headlining this year’s Rumble will be The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, sponsored by The Hasson Company, a longtime supporter of the Rumble. Lake Oswego bands Stim Pak and special guest R.A.F. will also perform.

Promotional materials say “the all-new-and-improved Rumble” will feature a revamped layout with dance floor and lots of added seating. Deschutes Brewery is bringing microbrews, and local wines will be available. Gourmet food carts Road Dog, Koi Fusion and The PJB Grill will be onsite and Crave Bake Shop and Cupcake Jones will take care of desserts.

Serving as emcees for the event are KINK FM radio morning show co-host Dave Scott and KGW News Channel 8’s chief meteorologist, Matt Zaffino.

Besides great music and dancing, there will be a raffle and an auction of three special items, including:

n Dinner for six prepared by gourmet chef and torch diva Storm Large at the DeCourcy/Fish home. All libations, a customized menu and wines are included. A private duet by Storm and hostess DeCourcy could possibly ensue.

n DeCourcy is also offering a custom-designed evening or special occasion gown from the Michelle DeCourcy Collection. The fabrication and design will be customized to perfection by Michelle for a once-in-a-lifetime piece for a prom, wedding or special event.

n A guitar autographed by The Shins lead singer James Mercer.

Raffle tickets are $100; the winner will receive a one-week Hawaiian vacation on Kauai and Maui, courtesy of the American Cancer Society.

DeCourcy said her goal for the event is to raise enough money to fund a research project in honor of her best friend, Melanie Sessions, who died this year of cancer. Sessions had been instrumental in organizing Rumble on the River events since its inception.

“There is such a need and funding research is so critical to everything,” she said.

Tickets to the Rumble on the River are $125 each and can be purchased online at Donations can also be made on the site, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
