Libraries offer new programs

Ed2Go and Livemocha online programs available

Learning a new skill and gaining new knowledge is now as easy as surfing the Web, thanks to a new program being launched at the Lake Oswego Public Library.

The library is now offering Ed2Go, a new online learning tool through which county library cardholders can access educational courses at no charge.

“There are over 300 classes on here and a wide range of subjects, on anything from like professional development to personal development,” said Fawn McGee, reference librarian. “So there is accounting, Web design and finance as well as grammar and how to be more assertive and things like that. They are all free and they are all six weeks long. There’s a new session of every class every month.”

Courses are offered in accounting and finance, business, college readiness, computer applications, design and composition, health care and medical, language and arts, law and legal issues, personal development, teaching and education, technology, and writing and publishing. They are all online and self-paced. You simply sign up for classes and then access the material on the class site.

Each week two lessons are released; you go through the material at your own pace. You are given a certain amount of time to complete each course at the end of the six-week session.

McGee will be holding an informational session tomorrow, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon in the conference room on the library’s second floor to teach people about the new program.

Plan on attending or visit the city webpage at ci.Oswego.or.us, then click on the “Library” tab. From there click on “Online resources and articles,” then “Additional resources” and click on the “Ed2Go” logo.

According to library staff, West Linn library cardholders will also be able to access Ed2Go through the same link. The West Linn Public Library also subscribes to Livemocha, a Web-based tutor that offers courses in 38 languages.

To use Livemocha from home, you must have a Clackamas County library card in good standing. For more information, call the information desk at 503-656-7853, ext. 6. To learn more or to access Livemocha, visit westlinnoregon.gov/library/learn-new-language.
