Join CureSearch Walk Sept. 22

CureSearch for Children’s Cancer will hold the Portland CureSearch Walk Sept. 22 at S.E. 7th Ave. at S.E. Sellwood Blvd.

The event celebrates and honors children whose lives have been affected by childhood cancer, while raising funds for lifesaving research. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremony and walk begins at 10 a.m.

“It’s a nice, flat walk,” said Lake Oswego resident Susan Schrader, who is captain of the Game Changers team participating in the walk. “It’s a perfect walk for families and those with strollers.”

According to the nonprofit’s website, curesearch.org, every day 36 children are diagnosed with cancer.

The average age of children diagnosed is six and more than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year. Over the past 40 years, the overall survival rate for children’s cancer has increased from 10 percent to 78 percent — CureSearch’s goal is a survival rate of 100 percent.

To reach that 100 percent cure rate, CureSearch is mobilizing individuals, families and corporations across the nation to support its efforts. You can help by joining the walk or, if you are unable to attend, become a virtual walker by donating to the event.
