Pick up a new outdoor skill Friday evenings through the remainder of August at Tryon Creek State Natural Area.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Topics covered include hiking, traditional and wilderness skills. Registration is required and can be done online at or by calling 503-636-9886 ext 226.

Aug. 16 — the basics of cooking over an open fire in a Dutch oven will be demonstrated. Sample what is cooked while you discover the history of this useful tool.

Aug. 23 — The 10 essentials of hiking. Learn what you should always have in your pack when you set out on the trail. Whether you are going for a two-hour hike, day hike or a week-long camping trip, you will want to have these 10 essential items with you.

Aug. 30 — Introduction to wild food. Plant identification is key to safely finding wild food. Get tips for what to look for in an edible plant and find out which edible plants are hiding in the forest at Tryon Creek as well as in your backyard.
