High Spirits opens Lost Treasures Collection series

Strong women is theme for this seasons rarely performed musicals

Lakewood Theatre Company will present the Lost Treasures Collection series of rarely performed musical productions again this season.

This year, three musicals, all following the theme of strong women, will be presented in concert/cabaret style. The first offering, “High Spirits,” will have just three performances: Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 2 and 7 p.m. Performances are at Lakewood’s Side Door State at the Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. in Lake Oswego.

“High Spirits” is based on the play “Blithe Spirits” by Noel Coward. In the musical, writer Charles Condomine (Joe Theissen) hosts a séance conducted by medium Madame Arcati (Maggi Chapin) in the hope that he’ll learn her tricks so he can use the information in his new novel.

His assumption that she is a fake is proven wrong when she falls into a trance and unwittingly conjures the spirit of his late wife, Elvira (Evynne Hollens), although he alone can see her. His present wife, Ruth (Pam Mahon), believes that Charlie is joking until Elvira moves into the Condomine household much to the confusion of Edith (Lisa Knox), the housemaid.

The performances are presented script in hand with minimal staging — no sets, no props. Food and beverages are available for purchase before and during the show.

Tickets are $20 for all seats. The whole series of three musicals is available for a subscription package of $55. Contact the Lakewood Theatre box office at 503-635-3901 or order online at lakewood-center.org.
