Marylhurst University professor Jay Ponteri was awarded the Sarah Winnemucca Award for Creative Nonfiction at the Oregon Book Awards for “Wedlocked.”

The book considers what it’s like to be lonely inside a marriage, to push away the one who loves you and fail as a husband. It looks inside an American marriage and describes what it sees through the lens of human loneliness.

“Jay is a compassionate writer and teacher, and this award is both an affirmation of his book and the creative writing program he directs here at Marylhurst,” said Meg Roland, chairwoman of Marylhurst’s Department of English Literature and Writing. “He brings a spirit of generosity to our students and writing community.”

Ponteri directs the undergraduate creative writing program at Marylhurst and is the founder of the university’s show: tell summer workshop for teen writers and artists and two online literary magazines. “Wedlocked” is his first book.
