LTC announces next season of plays

Lakewood Theatre Company will open its 62nd season with six productions on its Mainstage and three productions on its Side Door stage, beginning July 11. Season tickets for the 2014-2015 season are on sale now; prices for the six show season range from $170 to $180.

“Welcome to our 62nd season,” Lakewood Center for the Arts Executive Director Andrew Edwards said. “We are celebrating with the Portland area premiere of the Mel Brooks hit ‘Young Frankenstein,’ the world premiere of ‘The Seven Wonders of Ballyknock’ and the audience-requested musical, ‘Mame.’ Plus orders received before May 12 receive discounted tickets to our summer show, “The 39 Steps.”

Edwards said subscribers can also preorder tickets for the Lost Collection series as well as the Lakewood in Lights holiday gala and fundraiser in December.

The 2014-2015 season includes these plays:

The 39 Steps

“The 39 Steps,” adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan. A man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. The production will run July 11 through Aug. 17.

Young Frankenstein

“Young Frankenstein,” with book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Mel Brooks. From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation, “The Producers,” comes this monster new musical comedy. Musical numbers include such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” This production runs from Sept. 12 through Oct. 19.

She Loves Me

“She Loves Me,” with book by Joe Masteroff based on the play by Miklos Laszio and music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Georg and Amalia are clerks in a European perfumery during the 1930s who secretly find solace in their anonymous, romantic pen pals, little knowing their correspondents are each other. “She Loves Me” is a musical with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as relevant as ever in the age of internet romance. The production runs Nov. 7 through Dec. 21.

The Seven Wonders of Ballyknock

“The Seven Wonders of Ballyknock,” written by Oregonian C.S. Whitcomb. When a mysterious young American woman appears looking for a room, the barman sets out to show her the seven wonders of Ballyknock. As wonders unfold, she discovers a joy in life, finds love and a home. “The Seven Wonders of Ballyknock” originated at Portland’s Fertile Ground original play festival in 2013. It will run Jan. 9 through Feb. 15, 2015.

Three Men on a Horse

“Three Men on a Horse,” by John Cecil Holm and George Abbot. Erwin Trowbridge chafes at suburban life and his rather uninspiring job of writing greeting card slogans. He falls in with two men and a girl whose profession is betting on horses. Now Erwin’s hobby is figuring out the race winners and he becomes fabulously rich, on paper. There’s just one catch … he’ll lose his powers if he personally bets on a horse. This production runs March 6 through April 12.

Mame

“Mame,” based on the novel by Patrick Dennis and the play “Auntie Mame” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Erwin Lee with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. At the height of the 1920s Auntie Mame becomes the guardian of Patrick, her young nephew. Her life turns upside down but she still lives life to the fullest. Special songs include “Mama,” “It’s Today, Open a New Window” and “Bosom Buddies.” The show runs May 1 through June 7.

The 2014-15 Lost Treasures Collection, a series of obscure and rarely performed musicals, will present “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman,” “What Makes Sammy Run,” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
