Spring band concert set Sunday night

Music lovers to be treated to wide variety from great composers

The Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band under director Dale Cleland will perform the concert “Serenade to Spring” on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Lakeridge High School.

“We have a concert to please almost all musical tastes,” Cleland said. There will be no admission price to hear a selection of music ranging from a Bach fugue to the theme of The Lone Ranger, adapted from “Ride of the Valkyries” by Richard Wagner.

A special feature of the night will be a euphonium solo by Jeff Binns, who will play “Harlequin” by Philip Spark. Binns earned great audience acclaim with his performance of “Carnival of Venice” at last year’s spring concert.

Guest conductor David Matthys will conduct two pieces, including a collection of Moravian folk dances and music by John Williams from the award-winning film “Lincoln.”

More highlights will include “The City of Gold” movement from the symphony “New Day Rising,” and some rousing marches, a Millennium Concert Band specialty. Filling out the program will be the pieces “Shadows” and the experimental work “Sparkle.”

Prior to the concert there will be a performance by the Millennium Clarinets from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. Accompanying the music will be a display of art by watercolorist Dorothy Moore and ceramics artist Karen Swank, which will be displayed in the lobby of the auditorium. Doors for the performance open at 6:30 p.m.

Lakeridge High School is located on 1235 Overlook Drive in Lake Oswego.
