SUBMITTED PHOTOs: CYDNY WINSLOWThe last thing parents who shell out good money for their children to go to summer camp want to get is a “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” letter.

“They want to know their kid is not sitting around and doing nothing,” said Jessica Lee, administrative assistant for the city of Lake Oswego.

That is why LO Explorers Camp is succeeding so well. What specialized camps used to provide in Lake Oswego, the city camp now provides, offering fantasy, science, science fiction, Alice in Wonderland, trips to the past and future, mythical creatures, dragon eggs, mermaids, Hogwarts, and always the fun of learning. Right in the West End Building for eight weeks.

“We’ve seen a real shift of what parents want to pay for,” said Cydny Winslow, city teen and youth program coordinator. “They now want their money’s worth, and that is why we’re providing a day camp with the specialized camp experience.

“The feedback we’ve gotten is amazing. They say, ‘This is the best camp we’ve ever been to.’ We keep things fresh and new.”

For instance, this week’s theme is “Back to the Future.” Kids can step into the sneakers of Michael J. Fox and simulate traveling back into time; maybe meet Cleopatra, say hello to a Viking, hunt for raptor eggs and wrap up a mummy. They will complete this week by making like cavemen and climbing walls at the Portland Rock Gym.

“It’s awesome,” Lee said.

“There are options for every level of parent,” Winslow said. “There is before and after care offered.”

There are still two weeks left for LO Explorers Camp. For Aug. 6 to 10, the theme is “Symphony of the Five Senses,” which will include a field trip to Sky High for jumping and diving, and “Space Oddity” for Aug. 13 to 17, a camp that will involve swimming, exploring and aliens in a jar.
