Marylhurst to host Creative Arts Therapies Conference

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Lillian Platt, a Native American Artist, will tell the myths and legends of her culture at Sunday's Creative Arts Therapy Association conference at Marylhurst University.Something new is planned for the annual Creative Arts Therapy Association conference at Marylhurst University on Sunday.

The title of the event is “The Dance, Art and Song of Aging.”

The conference will feature Native American artist and storyteller Lillian Pitt, whose work has been exhibited across the nation.

“She is going to tell the myths and legends of her culture,” said Tamara Gilbert of CATA. “We think she will be very inspiring.”

Much more is planned, as the conference explores how the arts of music, art, drama and dancing can be used to contribute to a healthy aging process.

Three community groups will perform, including a choir of Parkinson Disease patients and a creative dance group of persons aged 60-plus.

Experiential workshops will focus on the use of movement, music, storytelling, drama, and multimodal approaches that can help people cope with the complexities of aging.

The conference will feature a closing ritual that will process everything that takes place during the day and draw it all together.

The conference will be held in Flavia Hall from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The conference is designed to nurture professional growth and provide networking opportunities for therapists as well as students, gerontologists, social workers, senior care providers, psychologists, psychologists, medical professionals, and others.
