Plato shaves head!

According to Lake Oswego High School teacher Chris Hill, participation in the Three Rivers League annual food drive competition over the past years has been lukewarm.

“We’d collect a couple thousand cans but it wasn’t much of a showing,” he said. But this year student organizers set the lofty goal of collecting 15,000 cans, and teachers and administration came up with some interesting incentives to help reach that goal.SUBMITTED PHOTO Lake Oswego High School Principal Bruce Plato vowed to shave his head if the school could collect 20,000 cans of food during the Three Rivers League annual food drive competition. More than 28,917 were collected, so he shaved his head at the end of school last Friday.

English teacher Julie Davis said she would dye her hair navy blue if 3,000 cans of food were collected. Social studies teacher Andrew Duden said he would dye his hair if 5,000 cans were collected. Math teacher Daniel Kumprey offered to have a fractal shaved into his hair when 7,000 cans were collected. Vice Principal Jason Wold pledged to dance at halftime of the Lake Oswego/Lakeridge basketball game if students could collect 10,000 cans. But the topper came from Principal Bruce Plato, who pledged to shave his head if students collected 20,000 cans.

The school community rallied and collected more than 28,000 cans, so as students walked out the door last Friday Plato shaved his head in the school front lobby.

“As of now, we have accumulated 28,917 cans - 22 cans per student - which will provide thousands of meals to families in Oregon,” Hill said.

Hill said each department at the school held its own competition and the winners of those competitions would receive a trophy and be treated to a doughnut party in January.

That clearly put LOHS at the top of the Three Rivers standing. West Linn High School finished second with 11,822 cans, Oregon City delivered 9,533, Canby gathered 8,626 and Lakeridge contributed 6,109.
