Ten Berge a step closer to Rose Festival Court


LOHS junior makes it through the first hoops in Oregons biggest festival

Lake Oswego High School junior Megan Ten Berge was named a first round winner for the 2013 Rose Festival Court in competition held Feb. 9 at the Lloyd Center. She is one of 55 students selected to move onto the next level from the original group of 103 young ladies. Each applicant gave a one-minute introduction, a one-minute speech and answered two impromptu questions posed by a panel of community volunteer judges.

Junior and senior girls from class 4A to 6A schools in the tri-county area who have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and 20 hours of verifiable community service were eligible to compete. Candidates represented the 13 traditional Portland schools as well as the East Metro area, in which Ten Berge is a competitor, and West Metro, with covers Washington county schools.

Ten Berge and the other finalists will enter the second round of competition on Feb. 23 at Lloyd Center where they will give thre-minute speeches on the Rose Festival them,e “Portland’s Party,” and answer seven separate questions in a 10-minute time frame. The princesses will be announced at separate events held between March 1 and March 22; the Metro East princess will be announced March 13 at 2 p.m. at Hollywood Theater.

“It is such a good opportunity to represent Lake Oswego,” said Ten Berge. “My friend Mehek was a princess last year and it was such a great experience for her.”

Members of the 2013 Rose Festival Court receive a $3,500 scholarship provided by The Randall Group.

From the court of princesses a queen will be selected and crowned during the Queen’s Coronation ceremony to be held June 8 at 9:15 a.m., just before the Grand Floral Walk.
