Lakeridge High School’s sixth annual event on Friday offered more than a sample of other worlds, it also served as a fundraiser for entrepreneurs across the globe, said Julie Pacheco-Toye, Lakeridge Spanish teacher and world languages department chair. The event raised $351 for Kiva, a nonprofit organization that helps individuals worldwide get small loans to start businesses.

The school’s Multicultural Club organizes and leads International Night each year, but other school clubs, teachers and community members also pitch in. Other highlights included taiko, traditional Japanese drumming; and origami, calligraphy and Taekwondo-powered board breaking.

French teacher Lisa Grimm sang “La Vie en Rose” and other French compositions. Pacheco-Toye performed a Flamenco dance “to a soulful, traditional tango.”

A photo booth provided the opportunity to snap pictures in clothes like the folk costumes of Japan, China as well as European and Latin American countries. “All the performers and club members and advisers donate their time for the evening,” Pacheco-Toye said.by: REVIEW PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - Lakeridge High School freshman Trent Cowden of the Chinese Club tests his ability to use chopsticks by picking up pea seeds.
