Riverdale senior claims victory in Chicago

A Riverdale High School senior won the International Bridge Building Competition in Chicago last Saturday.

Bret Lorimore gave his school its second first-place prize in less than five years, said Jody Haagenson, Riverdale School District spokeswoman. Riverdale student Jennie Hubbard placed eighth, making this “the school’s best combined showing,” Haagenson said. It is the ninth consecutive year that Riverdale has represented Oregon at the competition, she said.

Lorimore took home a plaque, an iPad and a partial scholarship to Illinois Institute of Technology. Lorimore intends to study engineering at Oregon State University.

The International Bridge Building Competition involves applying physics principles to a model bridge crafted from basswood.
