Looking to the future

Lake Oswego teen wins national art contest

Delaney Januzzi, 18, received a $1,000 scholarship for placing in the Frame My Future Scholarship Contest. It took her about eight hours to polish off her untitled digital painting. Church Hill Classics, which manufactures and sells products, including college diploma frames, has put on the art contest for five consecutive years.

Applicants for the Monroe, Conn.-based company’s scholarship must visually express their career goals. Januzzi plans to major in character animation at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Calif., and her winning piece shows her drawing figures that come to life.Delaney Januzzi

“I’m really excited,” said Januzzi, who graduates from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland this June. The contest “definitely helped me place my future into goals. Instead of just thinking where I’ll be in 20 years, it helped me think of what steps to take to achieve my goals, like applying for scholarships like this one.”

Januzzi said she is honored to have been chosen.

“It was a really big deal for me and my mom, my family,” she said.

It’s not the first time Januzzi has been lauded for her art. She walked away with three gold keys and four silver keys earlier this year from the regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She also pocketed a gold key last year and earned a silver key her sophomore year in regionals.

“Delaney is one of the most talented students that I have had the privilege to teach,” said Kathy Mitchell, a St. Mary's Academy art teacher. “She has amazing animation skills as well as organizational skills.”

Also an athlete, the young artist has been involved in crew, track and field and downhill ski racing. Januzzi is a member of the National Art Honor Society and a leader of the Art Club at her school.

She has resided in Lake Oswego for about 13 years, moving here from Florida, where she was born. She has one older sister and one younger one.

“She’s an extremely talented artist with a compassionate heart, and in her future I see her rivaling the Pixar animation team,” St. Mary’s Academy Principal Patricia Barr said.
