Fletcher was recognized for her outstanding leadership of Lake Oswegos youth program.Cydny Fletcher, coordinator for the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Youth and Teen program, has been honored with the SPRINT Direct Leadership Award.

Her honor was announced at the Oregon Recreation and Park Association annual conference in Welches last week.

Fletcher joined the local Parks & Recreation Department in 2007 and proceeded to develop an increasingly popular and innovative youth program, based on her philosophy that “Given the opportunity, youth will grow and flourish in an environment that promotes freedom, respect and trust.”

While accepting her award, Fletcher praised her “amazing team” at Teen Lounge for making visions of young people achieving success come true.

“I think the hallmark of a good leader is someone who is willing to listen, evolve and, most importantly, encourage people to be the best version of themselves,” she said.

She added, “And I have way too much fun at my job!”

The honoring of Fletcher was strongly approved of by Jan Wirtz, city recreation superintendent.

“I am so proud to work with Cyd,” Wirtz said. “She doesn’t run from correction and always provides positive acknowledgement and motivation while staying cool and calm, with a feisty sense of humor.”

Fletcher (formerly Cydny Winslow) has started such programs as McKenzie Lounge for Teens, the After School Activity Program, Friday Night Events and Field Trips, Youth Action Council, LO Explorers Camps and Teen Service Corp. She has consistently sought to provide youth and teens with a consistent and stable alternative to drugs and alcohol as well as providing opportunities to improve their quality of life through positive support systems and a well-balanced community.

This is not the first time Fletcher has been honored by SPRINT. In 2010, she received the SPRINT Programming Award. Since then Fletcher has increased program offerings, teen community and has also taken on tasks of researching, planning, coordinating and leading youth and camp programming. She developed a complete in-house day camp for youth ages of 6 to 12, including before-and-after care and weekly themes that incorporate two field trips.

Program participation has doubled from its first year to this summer, with each camp reaching participant capacity.

SPRINT is the Section for Programming Interests within Oregon Recreation and Park Association and serves people interested in creating and developing recreational and leisure classes, programs, activities, special events and field trips.
