Program offers tips on supporting a child

The Lake Oswego School District superintendent provides advice for buoying a child academically and emotionally.

Superintendent Bill Korach this month will offer a four-session program, Parenting Minds. Korach’s program aims to help parents: strengthen their child’s ability to problem solve in order to better face life challenges; build their child’s positive sense of self-awareness, self-confidence and resilience; and prepare their child for academic challenges related to Common Core State Standards to be piloted this year and implemented next school year.

Parents are encouraged to attend each one of the four sessions on Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Parents can attend either a daytime or evening session for each installment of the program: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. The program is offered at the Lake Oswego High School library, 2501 Country Club Road. Free childcare is available during evening sessions.

The cost to participate is $20 per person.

This is the final Parenting Minds program because Korach will be retiring at the end of the school year.

Rummage sale on tap soon

The two-day Forest Hills Elementary School Rummage Sale is coming this weekend — and it is one of the school’s largest fundraisers.

Sale items include furniture, children’s bicycles, toys, Christmas ornaments and shoes and clothing for adults and children. The event will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the gym at the school, 1133 Andrews Road.

Sale organizers are seeking donations, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today is the last chance to drop them off at the school gym. Organizers will not accept used mattresses, large appliances or broken or stained items. Clothing, furniture and housewares are among the recommended donations.

“We get a little bit of everything for the sale,” said Shellie Sheppard, sale organizer.
