Local elementary school students band together to help victims of Philippines typhoon

Ten students crafted hand-painted holiday cards featuring Christmas trees, penguins with hats, Santa and snowmen last week. The children sold the cards Sunday at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church in Lake Oswego and St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Portland. Raising $718 for Lake Grove’s World Vision charity and St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Relief Services, the positive community response prompted the kids to hold a sale this Saturday at the Lamb’s Nature’s Choice Market.by: SUBMITTED PHOTO: BOB ENGEL - Sadie and Sofie Fashana pause for a pose during a card-making party last week.

“The kids were really excited to see the generosity of others, how people were just so willing to support this cause,” said Kristen Engel, whose three daughters and their friends worked on the fundraiser together.

Earlier this month, an estimated 4,000 people died when Typhoon Haiyan struck a number of islands in the Philippines, which are due east of Vietnam. The number of people the catastrophic tropical cyclone displaced is estimated at 4 million, according to Thomson Reuters, an international news agency.

Westridge fifth-grader Grace Engel said she saw news coverage of the tragedy and wanted to do something to help.

“It makes me feel happy that I’m helping them, and I’m glad me and my friends are doing this,” Grace said.

The children drew their own designs, then photocopied them and painted each one.

Hallinan fifth-grader Sadie Tomlinson said she learned teamwork from the experience and that many people in the world are in need.

“I know in my heart that I’m doing something good,” she said.
