FilippelliThree times per trimester, the long arm of the law reaches out to students taking health classes at Lake Oswego Junior High School.

That arm’s attached to a hand — a hand that carries a satchel full of ... educational materials. Lake Oswego School Resource Officer Steve Filippelli offers LOJ students guidance in decision-making, and Filippelli discusses shoplifting and theft and holds a mock trial.

He also visits other local schools and meets with parent teacher groups, providing insight into topics such Internet safety. He said he applied to be a school resource officer as an optional part of his regular duties, and he’s now in his sixth year on the job.

“I love talking to the kids,” Filippelli said. “There’s never a dull moment, and it’s good to talk to them in an environment where they’re not in trouble and just talk to them about decision-making and how some things can positively or negatively affect their lives,” he said.

With this occasional series, we’ll be spotlighting members of the educational community. To nominate someone, email Jillian Daley at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
