At the Oregon Thespians state conference last week in Salem, Lakeridge High School sophomore Caroline Haroldson took the top spot in the solo musical category, Lakeridge junior Lucas Friedman triumphed in solo acting and Lake Oswego High School senior Steve Rathje snagged third place for playwriting. Several students attended the conference who were from both high schools.

Four Lakeridge students had qualified in a regional competition to be in a state showcase at the conference, and Rathje’s play was performed at the Historic Elsinore Theatre during the event, which also had activities at the Salem Convention Center.by: SUBMITTED PHOTO: AMY HAROLDSON - Steve Rathje, center, relaxes with his cast members, from left: Isabel Skene and Ruby King.

Drama teacher Bob McGranahan said the competitions begin the state festival but much of the activities center around workshops, learning opportunities and meeting like-minded theater people: “It’s like: ‘Look here’s our people.’”

Haroldson, an alto who won for her rendition of “My Party Dress” from “Henry and Mudge,” said she loved being surrounded by theater lovers from all over Oregon.

“I was starstruck the entire conference by so much talent,” said Haroldson, 15.

Rathje also performed, acting not only as the creator but also as the protagonist in his work, “Great Artists Steal,” which he said is about a successful professor named Jonathan, who, “upon publishing a new book entitled ‘Great Artists Steal,’ is involved in a scandal that (shakes up) his career and gives new meaning to the title of his book.”

The performance of his play at the conference earned a superior rating and a score of 102 out of 105 points, and it will be presented at the one acts series next week at Lake Oswego High School (see ‘One Acts’ article, above).

Isabel Skene, one of Rathje’s cast members, was named one of four officers on the student board of Oregon Thespians.

Lakeridge drama teacher Andy Ballnik said having four students selected to audition in the showcase was an accomplishment. They were Haroldson, Friedman, Daniel Barber and Christian Mitchell.

Then to have Haroldson and Friedman selected to be in the showcase “is a very big deal since LHS hasn’t been represented at the state showcase in a very long time,” Ballnik said.
