Now, Vitamin Z is planning on fundraising to get the students to the May 21 to 24 competition in Knoxville, Tenn., said Diana Laboy-Rush, whose son, Elliott, is a member of the team.

“We really need to rally the LO community to gather support to get the kids to get there,” Laboy-Rush said.

Destination Imagination is a nonprofit, educational program in which student teams solve challenges and present creative solutions at tournaments.

Three local teams advanced to regionals: Magical Moonfoxes, Westridge Elementary School’s Pink Piggies and Vitamin Z, composed of Westridge and Hallinan elementary school students. Teams take on a challenge and come up with a creative solution.

Vitamin Z took on the solving the service learning challenge, Pitch & Play, requiring students to identify a genuine community need, create a solution and perform a skit about it. Team member and fifth-grader Tessa DiVergilio led the team in creating an app to prepare people for earthquakes, guiding users through a series of questions to help them put together a plan and an emergency kit. Vitamin Z’s app, The Golden Quake, sparked as a project for the FIRST LEGO Robotics League tournament in December, where the group triumphed. Tessa said the app idea arose from the potential for a major earthquake in Oregon and team members’ love of technology. The app is available in the Google Play store.
