Touchstone students making friends

Kids create artworks that support children in need

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Lots of Touchstone Elementary School parents and kids were involved in Family Art Night, at which FriendBots were a feature, including mom Kylie Sabine and daughter Cerys.Every year, Family Art Night comes to Touchstone Elementary School, but this year, students’ art project also aided children who just might need a boost.

Students at the Lake Oswego school hand-painted 100 friendly robots on dominos, or FriendBots, who are destined to land into the hands of Oregon foster children, along with a keepsake box that says: “This robot has been programmed to be your friend. “The FriendBots themselves also bear a message: “I will listen,” “You are special,” “I think you are worthy,” “I think you are strong.”by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - FriendBots (or GoodLuckBots or Joy Bots) are friendly, painted dominos that come with a positive message.

“Outreach is a really big part of who we are,” Touchstone Elementary School Principal Ginger Schaffer said.

Another about 80 decorated dominos were made to serve as an art installation at the school, and 100 red GoodLuckBots are hidden around town. The goal is that people will find them, take a photo, hide them and tweet the whereabouts of the bots.

The domino bots are the brainchild of area artist Gary Hirsch, and a child at Touchstone received one while in the hospital, inspiring the cheery artworks to arrive at the private school at 2 SW Touchstone Drive.

Touchstone parent Sabrina Porcaro Trembley spearheaded the project.

“We’re so fortunate to have a Family Art Night project that has several positives. ... We’re very grateful to ... area artist Gary Hirsch for allowing us to re-create his popular project,” Porcaro Trembley said.
