Six Riverdale top scholars are heading to colleges near and far

Dan Palma, a drama, history, art and film teacher, will be one of several speakers.

Valedictorian Nicole Hollingshead and salutatorian Anna Oliver-Steinberg also will be among those addressing the 65-student Class of 2014 at the ceremony, as will student-elected speaker Jesse Jansen.

Jansen, Hollingshead, Oliver-Steinberg and three other students have been named top scholars. The top scholars recently shared their favorite quote, book and memory, and touched on their plans for the future.


Nicole Hollingshead

Future Plans: McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, CanadaPlanned area of study: Faculty of Science: biology


Anna Oliver-Steinberg

Future plans: Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon in Eugene. 

Planned area of study: Science and psychology 

Favorite memory: Going to India last year on a service trip to raise money for a health clinic in rural Kerala.

Favorite book: “Never Let Me Go,” by Kazuo Ishiguro

Madeline Hauenstein

Future plans: Pitzer College in California

Planned area of study: Undecided

Favorite memory: Lunch out in the sun.

Favorite quote: From Douglas Adams: “In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

Jessie Jansen Jessie Jansen

Future plans: Dickinson College in Pennsylvania

Planned area of study: Management or human resources

Favorite memory: My favorite memory is when my advanced-placement calculus class would go on adventures, like to Tryon Creek after an AP test.

Favorite book: “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” by Kate DiCamillo

Collin Styring

Future plans: Harvard University in Massachusetts

Planned area of study: Economics

Favorite memory: Taking first place at the Oregon State Track and Field Championships for the 4x400 Relay and setting a new school record.

Favorite quote: From Timbuk3: “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”

Mark Lindquist

Future plans: University of Oregon in Eugene

Planned area of study: Biology

Favorite memory: Driving to Government Camp with Adrian Lurie.

Favorite quote: “Do a job, big or small, do it right or not at all.”
