Be a student columnist

The deadline to apply for a high school columnist position with The Review is one week away.

Applications for the 2014-15 school year are due July 31. Columnists the Review staff chooses will submit columns on a rotating schedule — once every four weeks.

Students from Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and Riverdale high schools are encouraged to apply, as are students who attend other area high schools but live in Lake Oswego.

Columnists are expected to generate original column ideas and adhere to strict deadlines. Students should use their writing to offer a window into their high school experience and to provide a student perspective on local and national events.

Columns must meet journalistic standards of writing, research and substantiation. Review editors and writers will guide students.

Opportunities for guest student columnists also are available. These meet the same standards as regular student columns but are published less frequently.

To apply for one of these unpaid positions, send your name, year in school, which school you are attending, address, telephone number and a short biography — emphasis on short — to The Review. Please submit a sample column (about 500 to 600 words) on a subject of your choice, as well as a list of two other ideas you’d like to write about. Interviews for finalists for student columnist positions will be held later this summer.
