Lake Oswego store now hiring 90 employees

The Walmart neighborhood market set to open in Lake Oswego this fall will employ about 90 people, the company has announced.

The store is scheduled to open at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 24 with a ribbon-cutting event.

It’s located at 17711 Jean Way, just off Boones Ferry Road in Lake Grove, in the former Wild Oats building, which has sat vacant for years. The store manager is Ashley Knipe, who began her Walmart career as a cashier at a Portland-area store in 2000, according to the company. The assistant manager is Jess Wilson.

The company opened its first neighborhood market on the West Coast in May on Highway 43 in West Linn. Neighborhood markets, about one-fifth the size of Walmart superstores, look a lot like traditional grocery stores. Usually they are about 42,000 square feet and employ up to 95 people, company representatives said.

The one in Lake Oswego will be a bit smaller. The building is about 34,000 square feet, and city code would typically limit any single use — such as a grocery store — to 26,500 square feet on this site.

Hiring is now taking place. New employees will likely begin working in September, before the store’s October grand opening, according to the company. Walmart has opened a temporary hiring center at 5775 Jean Road, Suite 104, in Lake Oswego. Applicants can also go to for more information.
