Fire destroys police motorbike during traffic stop

by: SUBMITTED - This Lake Oswego Police Department motorcycle was destroyed by a fire Sunday when an officer was conducting a traffic stop. The fire's cause remains unknown.A Lake Oswego police motorcycle was deemed a complete loss after a rapidly spreading fire scorched the bike on Sunday.

The police officer who had been riding it was conducting a traffic stop and was not injured, the fire department reported.

The incident happened at McVey Avenue and Laurel Street at about noon Sunday.

The officer, who was not named, heard a “strange noise” from his motor bike and looked over toward it, according to the fire department. Seeing flames shooting from the front of the motorcycle, he grabbed what he could — including a radar gun and saddle bags — but anything else remaining on the bike was lost.

Firefighters arrived within two minutes of hearing about the fire. At that point, the bike was completely engulfed in flames.

Investigators are looking into the fire’s cause but think fuel in the gas tank contributed to its fast spread, the fire department reported.
