Shark bites LO man near South Maui beach

by: COURTESY OF THE MAUI NEWS: MATTHEW THAYER PHOTO - Lake Oswegan Tom Kennedy talked about being attacked by a shark Friday afternoon before being wheeled into surgery at Maui Memorial Medical Center.A 61-year-old Lake Oswego man is recovering in a Maui hospital after a shark bit him while he was snorkeling on the south side of the island.

Maui police said Tom Kennedy suffered multiple lacerations to his lower left leg and thigh in the attack.

Kennedy was snorkeling at about 10 a.m. from a stand-up paddleboard about 200 yards off shore near Kalama Beach Park in Kihei. While he snorkeled, Kennedy told Maui Ocean Safety officers that a shark with a nearly 2-foot-wide head bit his lower left leg. Two relatives with him helped Kennedy to shore, trailing blood in the water, and tended his wound while awaiting medical help.

Maui News reporter Melissa Tanji wrote that Kennedy has used a stand-up paddleboard on Oswego Lake. A construction crew nearby called 9-1-1 to summon help, Tanji reported.

Several beaches on the south side of Maui were closed for most of the day because of the shark attack.
