School board starts search for new superintendent

Board to interview recruiting firms in January

Lake Oswego School District Superintendent Bill Korach is the longest-serving superintendent in the state, but his time in that position is running out.

Korach officially retired on March 1 and will cease working on a post-retirement contract on June 30, 2014.

With that in mind, school board members Terri Oelrich and Patti Zebrowski last month drafted and sent out a request for proposals for superintendent search firms. They and their fellow board members Bob Barman, Linda Brown and Chairman John Wendland each reviewed what they liked, disliked and found unique about the six firms that responded by the Dec. 7 deadline and came together at a board meeting Monday afternoon to vote on which three would be invited for interviews in January.

By a majority vote, the board selected BWP and Associates of Libertyville, Ill.; Hazard Young, Attea and Associates of Jersey City, N.J.; and Ray and Associates Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Brown said these firms were chosen for their demonstrated knowledge of Lake Oswego and “very strong success working with similar districts nationwide.”

She added: “Two of the proposed firms have active superintendents on their teams, but if they are selected we will request different liaisons who are not active supers,” to ensure they will be able to commit adequate time to a search.

The school board’s most recent superintendent search timeline, updated in September, proposed to have selected a search firm by this month but also stated that it was subject to change.

“The board has built in adequate time to complete the process,” said LOSD Director of Communications Nancy Duin, “including flexibility to meet individual milestones.”
