'Tall Man' bank robbery suspect captured in Portland

Chris Evans could face charges in six Lane County bank robberies.FBI agents in Portland have arrested a 25-year-old man they believe is the “Tall Man” bandit responsible for six Lane County bank robberies in the past month.

At about 10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 21, special agents took Chet Evans into custody near the intersection of Northeast Interstate Avenue and Sumner Street.

Evans will be lodged in the Lane County Jail later today and appear Friday before a federal judge. He was charged with the March 18 robbery of a Coburg Road Key Bank branch in Eugene.

Evans is a suspect in a five-week string of bank robberies that began Feb. 14. Monday’s Key Bank robbery was the most recent one by the man FBI agents nicknamed the “Tall Man” bandit because the suspect in each of the cases was between 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-4.

According to the FBI, Evans’ lived in Eugene but had ties to Medford, Ashland, Portland and Lake Oswego.

Once a week for the past five weeks, the Tall Man bandit suspect robbed bank branches, most of which were inside grocery stores. In all the robberies, the suspect approached tellers, demanded cash and left with an undisclosed amount of money. In recent robberies, the suspect was seen driving away in a dark sedan.

The man arrested Thursday in Portland is a suspect in the Feb. 14 robbery of a U.S. Bank inside an Albertsons on Coburg Road in Eugene; the Feb. 20 robbery of a Chase Bank inside a Springfield Fred Meyer store; the Feb. 25 robbery of an Umpqua Bank branch on West 11th Avenue in Eugene; the March 6 robbery of a U.S. Bank branch inside a Springfield Safeway store; and the March 15 robbery of a U.S. Bank branch inside a Eugene Albertsons store.

On Wednesday, the FBI, working with the Eugene and Springfield police departments, identified the “Tall Man” bank bandit as Evans and offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
