The Lake Oswego Women’s Club Lake Run this year sports its highest fundraising goal on record, potentially changing the lives of local families and community service-minded students.

Organizers of the 37th annual event aim to bring in $100,000, $22,000 more than last year, Lake Run Sponsorship Chairwoman Kari Borgen said. To hit its target, Borgen said the club is working to spur participation and sponsorship while paring back expenditures by using a new route for the longest race, dropping it from a 12K run to a 10K run. Runners and walkers are already pre-registering on the club’s website,

Children’s activities abound, and there are several shorter runs, food and music. Proceeds from the May 11 event, based at Millennium Plaza Park, support local students and survivors of domestic violence.

“We have streamlined how we organize and pay for the race to better maximize our profit margin,” Borgen said.

The effort to maximize profits could give the club’s beneficiaries a boost. Borgen said the Lake Run is the club’s most important fundraiser.

Women’s club funds benefit groups such as The Children’s Center in Clackamas County, a nonprofit offering medical assessments for children in cases of suspected abuse; and Clackamas Women’s Services, the only shelter in the county for women and children trying to escape domestic violence.

Lake Run dollars also fund three $1,000 college scholarships per year for Lake Oswego and West Linn students who perform an exemplary level of community service, Lake Run Chairwoman Diana Del Garbino said.

One money-saving measure is shifting the route so fewer streets are closed and fewer barricades are required, cutting barricade costs in half, Del Garbino said. The 5K, half-mile Kids Dash for children 11 and younger and One-Mile Walk routes remain the same.

The goal is to draw 1,500 to 1,700 runners, a jump from last year’s 1,200 to 1,300 runners. Del Garbino said finishers will not receive cotton T-shirts as they did last year but a Dri-Fit-style shirt and a medal.

A few more sponsors could be coming on board with about a dozen so far throwing their support behind the event. Sponsors include the Lake Oswego Review and the city.

At the Lake Run’s Family Fun Festival, there will be children’s activities such as airbrush face-painting, a Lakeridge High School football team obstacle course and Lake Oswego High School cheer team lessons in rooting for the home team. Food booths and local businesses will be on hand such as Muscles in Motion personal training and Jeffrey Sessions, an orthodontist who will cheer children with balloon animals and arts and crafts.

“It’s near Mother’s Day so it’s really fun for people to come out, and they can spend their day with their mom at the Family Fun Festival and just really enjoy their time,” Del Garbino said.

No matter the activities or the year the event is held, the club’s own contributions help keep cash in the kitty, she said.

“All the women that are helping with the Lake Run are all volunteers, even me,” Del Garbino said.

Community leaders founded the women’s club, a nonprofit group of volunteers, in 1974. The group started documenting its community donations in 1991, tallying a history of giving of $1.8 million since then.

“We enjoy being active in our community while seeing how our contribution of this major fundraiser helps so many others,” Borgen said.
