Man allegedly tries to lure LO boy into van Wednesday afternoon

Lake Oswego police received a report of a man allegedly trying to lure a 14-year-old boy into his white van on Wednesday afternoon near Ninth Street and C Avenue.

According to police, the incident was reported at 3:30 p.m. The teen was walking home from Lake Oswego Junior High School, where he is a student, said Lake Oswego School District spokeswoman Nancy Duin. The man told the boy his mother had sent him to give him a ride home. The boy refused to get in the van and walked away. The stranger did not follow him, according to police.

The suspect was driving a white, full-sized van and was described as a Caucasian male with brown hair and a brown beard in his 30s. He was wearing a white tank top. Officers responded to the area but did not locate the subject or the vehicle.

Duin recommended safe practices for children such as “walking with friends when possible, not talking to strangers, being aware of their surroundings and reporting unusual or threatening incidents to a trusted adult.”

She also said parents should talk to their children about "stranger danger."

“It is also strongly recommended that police be contacted immediately when such situations arise,” a police statement said.

Anyone with information concerning this incident can call the Lake Oswego Police Department. The non-emergency dispatch line is 503-635-0238.
