They wrote essays for the Lake Oswego Preservation Society’s first historic preservation essay contest, and they were honored and awarded prizes at a special event held at The Bank of Oswego last Thursday.

“I think that the participants truly grasped the intent of the contest and wrote eloquently about their chosen subjects,” said LOPS founder and president Marylou Colver. “By this measure, our first contest was a great success.”

“You guys got it,” said event emcee Jack Walsdorf. “You showed why these buildings should be saved.”

Those honored were:

First place — Ilia Savin, junior at Lake Oswego High School, “Inside the Walls: Preserving the Charles S. Brown Boathouse,” $500 first prize.

Third place — Rebekah Jameson, Lakeridge High School senior, essay on the Lakewood Center for the Arts, $125 third prize.

Scholarships were funded by The Bank of Oswego.
