Hoard, Sparling join Review

LOHS grads attend Willamette University

The Lake Oswego Review recently welcomed two summer interns, Lake Oswego natives Zane Sparling and Emily Hoard.

Both Sparling and Hoard graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 2011 and went on to attend Willamette University, where they will be juniors this fall.

Both interns will write for the three weekly newspapers produced in Pamplin Media Group’s Lake Oswego office: Lake Oswego Review, West Linn Tidings and Wilsonville Spokesman.

“Zane and I have been in English classes together for years,” Hoard said. “He has a unique style with a great sense of humor, and I’m excited to work with him again this summer.”

Hoard is majoring in creative writing and Spanish and is interested in minoring in media and communications at Willamette. She has been passionate about writing since grade school, and over the years has developed skills in a range of styles.by: VERN UYETAKE - Emily Hoard

Her writing repertoire primarily consists of creative writing, literary theory papers, anthropological analysis and Spanish essays. Although she is new to journalism, she is quickly learning more about the Associated Press style.

“Emily has already jumped in, ready to work and learn,” said Lori Hall, editor of the West Linn Tidings and Wilsonville Spokesman. “She is willing to take on a variety of stories and issues, from car shows to ‘wisdom circles.’ We are thrilled to have her on board.”

Through her involvement with volunteer trips, athletics and her work as an administrative assistant at Willamette, Hoard has developed the confidence and ability to interview and talk to a wide range of people and engage with others from different walks of life to bring out their stories.

“I am so fortunate to have this opportunity to work directly with the editors in the newsroom,” Hoard said. “They are all talented newspeople who have much experience in the field, and I’m overjoyed to learn as much as I can from them and to grow as a writer.”

“Emily Hoard is off and running this summer at the newspaper,” Managing Editor Martin Forbes said. “She is a creative writer who strives to include fun details in her stories. Accuracy is paramount to her, and she will be generating a number of features for us — and you, the readers — this summer. We are so pleased to have her joining our ranks for the next couple of months.”

Sparling also had kind words for fellow intern Hoard.

“In the classroom, Emily’s insights felt fresh and trenchant,” Sparling said. “I can’t wait to see how she applies her singular perspective to the newsroom. If this internship were a competition, I’d concede.” by: VERN UYETAKE - Zane Sparling

Also an undergraduate at Willamette University, Sparling plans to major in English with a minor in Russian. In pursuit of his Russian minor, Sparling will study in Simferopol, Ukraine, during the upcoming fall semester.

“We are fortunate to have Zane join the paper this summer. His quick wit and writing ability will surely be enjoyed by readers,” Hall said.

With experience as a student journalist in high school, he has worked as a columnist, music and film critic, hard news reporter and (rather briefly) as an avant-garde cartoonist. In 2010-11, Sparling wrote a biweekly opinion column with a humorous spin for the Review.

While he still enjoys writing in the first-person point of view, Sparling said he welcomes the challenge of fact-based journalism.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to work in the newsroom,” he said. “The professionalism and quality of the Review staff means that the bar has been set extremely high. I won’t let this opportunity go to waste.”

This summer, Sparling also is employed part time at Willowbrook Arts Camp as a counselor.

“Many of our Review readers will remember the years of columns that Zane Sparling contributed both while attending Lake Oswego High School and after,” Forbes said. “He has an engaging writing style, is very accurate and is able to typically provide a fascinating approach to his stories. We have thoroughly enjoyed his writing before and are absolutely delighted to have him back this summer as one of our interns.”
