LO City Councilor Mike Kehoe resigns

Mayor considering list of a dozen potential replacements

Lake Oswego City Councilor Mike Kehoe has resigned from his position.MIKE KEHOE

As reported two weeks ago in the Review, Kehoe knew he would soon leave his post because he’s in the process of moving to San Diego. His family has already relocated to the Rancho Santa Fe area, although he is still spending plenty of time in Oregon to attend to business and to handle selling his Lake Oswego home.

The move stems from his youngest child’s future education. Jack Kehoe, just embarking on his junior year of high school, hopes to secure residency in California to give him a leg up when applying to the state’s top marine biology programs in two years.

Mike Kehoe, an entrepreneur and investor who owns commercial shopping centers and a property management company, among other business ventures, said then that he and his wife don’t have jobs that require them to live in Oregon. And their two older children, Brett and Paige, are already at California schools, Santa Clara University and University of Southern California, respectively.

In that case, moving to California was the “best thing for our family,” he said.

With Kehoe’s notice in hand, Mayor Kent Studebaker said the council would begin sifting through a list of potential candidates for the open position. Since Kehoe first indicated he would need to resign, councilors have offered up names of community members who might replace him. Citizens wrote in with ideas, too, and many of those names matched up with what councilors already had in mind, Studebaker said.

Kehoe’s letter, received by the city Monday, was dated Aug. 10 and stated that his resignation was effective immediately.

Studebaker said he is no longer looking for ideas of replacements and plans to narrow the list from about a dozen to eight or nine. He’ll ask those contenders to submit short resumes or biographies, and the council will interview them, possibly as soon as next week.

A majority of the remaining council members could then vote to appoint someone to fill the remainder of Kehoe’s term through 2014.
