A boat's-eye view of beauty

Second home tour on Oswego Lake will dazzle history lovers

by: SUSANNA KUO - It was anchors away for the first Lake Oswego Historic Boat Tour held in 2012. This year more than twice as many water-going history lovers are set to make the trip. At the right is tour guide Pam Hayden.Marylou Colver knew exactly what to do when the first Lake Oswego Historic Boat Tour was such a big success last year.

She made this year’s boat tour twice as big.

Colver and company will set sail Saturday on Oswego Lake, with tours set to launch at 8:30 a.m. and noon. Both trips are sold out.

“We sold out our 46 spots last year,” said Colver, founder of the Lake Oswego Preservation Society. “This year we will have 100 spots available. It will be two non-stop tours around the entire circumference of the lake. We’ll have a guide with a microphone on all six boats. We’ll also have a backup guide and a backup boat.”

It sounds very well planned. Last year’s tour got great word of mouth, so Colver was pleased to note that many people who own historic homes on the lake have signed up for this year’s tour.

“That’s quite a compliment,” Colver said. “A lot of people who took the tour last year are taking it again.”

What made the boat tour a success was that it offers a view of beautiful historic homes that can only come from the perspective of being on the lake.

“A lot of them can’t be seen on the street,” Colver said.

The tour comes to life because Colver and her associates of the LOPS have been doing research on the homes for years and have painstakingly built up a historical archive.

“We were doing research before we even had the idea for the boat tour,” Colver said. “We pride ourselves on the research we do.”

The Lake Corporation is again sponsoring the boat tour. Of the $75 ticket price, $25 will be tax deductible. Refreshments will be provided by Nicoletta’s Table of Lake Oswego. by: SUSANNA KUO - Four happy sailors are ready for the 2013 Lake Oswego Historical Boat Tour. Tour goers will be supporting a good cause.

“This is our biggest fundraiser,” Colver said. “It helps us to contribute to education, conferences, preservation and supporting other organizations.”
