Van erupts in flames

No one was injured after a van caught fire outside the Tigard Fred Meyer supermarket, Friday evening.

According to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, a family was driving to the Oregon Coast for the weekend when they smelled something burning inside the car at about 6:15 p.m.

The family pulled into the supermarket parking lot and found smoke coming from the vehicle.

The family evacuated the car moments before it went up in flames, according to TVF&R spokesman Chris Hamilton.

Shoppers snapped videos and photos, of the burning vehicle, which were uploaded to social networking sites such as YouTube and Reddit.

When a crew from TVF&R arrived a few minutes later, Hamilton said, they found the van fully engulfed in flame.

The blaze was quickly extinguished. No one was injured in the fire, Hamilton said.

Its unknown what started the fire, Hamilton said, but the van and its contents — which included camping equipment and other supplies — were destroyed.
