Two former Lake Oswego police officers accused of having sex while on duty have been stripped of their credentials.

Last week, state authorities voted unanimously to decertify Martin E. Bradford and Joshua P. Day. That means they can no longer work as police officers anywhere in Oregon.

Both resigned from the Lake Oswego Police Department in October of last year while under investigation for allegedly having sexual relationships with co-workers while on the clock.

The state agency’s decision was in line with the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training’s Police Policy Committee’s earlier recommendation to decertify Bradford and Day, although both submitted letters denying any sexual misconduct and urging the board to let them keep their certifications.

“I know that while on duty I engaged in what some would deem inappropriate talk but nothing that I have not heard fellow officers, sergeants, lieutenants and even captains speak,” Bradford wrote.

In his letter, Day said, “I have already lost my marriage, home, savings and reputation. Please allow me to keep my certification so I can provide for my children.”

Bradford has worked in law enforcement since June 2003. Before coming to Lake Oswego in July 2007, he worked for Manzanita’s public safety department.

Day began working in law enforcement in September 1998 as a civilian employee in the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. He then worked as a police officer for the Fairview Police Department. The Lake Oswego Police Department hired him in August 2006.

Lake Oswego Police Chief Don Johnson previously said he couldn’t comment on either case because they are personnel matters.

The Review is not naming three women who work for the LOPD who were mentioned in the cases against Bradford and Day because they weren’t the subject of the state’s reviews.
